Repent! The Greek word for “repent,” metanoeō, literally means “to change one’s mind—one’s attitude or mentality.” In the New Testament it is found especially in the preaching of John the Baptist, Jesus, and the apostles, where it refers to a radical change of direction, turning from sin to faith in God (see Catechism 1427). Although this word appears most often in the New Testament in relation to initial conversion, it also refers to repentance in the course of Christian life (2 Cor 7:9–11; 12:21).
